Maayan – The Source

Two Israelis came into my gallery in September 2023, I was immediately charmed by the name of the woman on the left, Maayan, which means source in English. I know of a beautiful spring, the source of the River Nova sacred to the Etruscans, not far away from Orvieto. I put both women together in a light hearted pastiche of the famous portrait of the d’Estrée sisters. Sadly the world took a dark turn only a month after we made this picture. There are two birds in the image, on the left the Hoopoe, on the right the Sunbird: they represent Israel and Palestine respectively.
As one of the women said, “It feels so natural to be naked in nature.”
