The Zeitgeist. Is the end of the world nigh? Sometimes a picture seems to represent the spirit of the times, or the Zeitgeist. We are living in an anxious age of global warming, forest fires, seemingly endless religious conflict, mass...
Patrick Nicholas is based in Orvieto in Central Italy, a land of water. Within an hour’s drive we have several lakes, springs, rivers, fast flowing streams at the bottom of deep gorges, and the Tyrrhenian Sea is only an hour away.
Patrick Nicholas specialises in taking Water Portraits in Central Italy. Who wouldn’t prefer to be photographed in the warmth and beauty of the Tuscan landscape as opposed to a photographic studio? The area within an hour of Orvieto is a land of water: lakes, waterfalls, streams and and the Mediterranean.
This is a humorous video about the making of this picture, Oceano di silenzio, and the difficulties encountered during shooting. The video is set to Battiato’s song.
Imagine yourself lying on a sun warmed rock looking up at the purest blue sky, water rushing beside you and then seeing that image hanging on your wall.
“A thing of beauty is a joy for ever”
John Keats
A water portrait was conceived as a weekend activity (but it can be during the week) of 3 nights and two days. The shoot usually takes an afternoon and evening each day. Normally we cater for at least two days shooting in order to visit varied locations.
The cost excluding accommodation is €950. This includes transportation to the various locations, make-up and styling, and the shooting of scores of photos. PLUS three large prints on Hahnemuhle fine art water colour paper up to 50x70cm (20×28″). The prints will be sent to you at home in a tube. You will also receive the shots from the shoot on a pen drive or CD while you are in Italy.
The water-portrait season lasts from May to end of October. Contact Patrick Nicholas to arrange your unique water portrait.

Rusalka, a Slavic folk tale set to music by Dvořák Vulci Gorge - on the way to the location of Rusalka Rusalka was suggested to me by Ania, a professional singer who had herself performed the role in Dvořák’s eponymous opera. A folk...
Nadia tells her story: "Pleasure is made of simple things. What could perhaps illustrate this best?" The ingredients of a picture: Luxe, Calme et Volupté comes from a line taken from Baudelaire’s poem Invitation du Voyage, but it was a news...
Poetry, music and painting, all converge in this photo-shoot, setting the mood for the final image. This picture had its origins in the sight of a freshly painted blue boat on the shores of Lake Bolsena which reminded me of a painting by Carl...
We set off to take a photo on the beach in mid October despite the awful weather because this was the last opportunity of the year. We had planned to take the picture back in 2007 when I met her shortly after opening my gallery in Orvieto, though...
In early spring 2009 I took the picture above of a weeping willow on Lake Bolsena, Italy. A fortnight later a high wind ripped off the upper bough and for at least a couple of years it lay semi-submerged, rotting in the shallow water...
Cyclamen is dear to the muses and Hecate, the mother goddess of dark, chthonic places and witchcraft; cyclamen is the flower of opposites. In folklore it symbolised life and death; an ingredient of wedding cakes to increase fertility yet a woman who...
I went to Art College in Kingston, London, on the banks of a shallow, weedy and unremarkable river with the evocative name of Hogsmill. We were told in History of Art that Millais painted his famous picture further up-stream. Millais’...
